Routing to Fable 5 by default is how engineering budgets get quietly doubled without proportional quality gains.
Fable 5's premium is justified when the task itself is hard enough that model quality directly changes the outcome: long-horizon autonomous coding runs, whole-codebase analysis in a single context window, scientific research synthesis, or multi-step reasoning where Opus 4.8's failure rate causes compounding downstream costs.
